I have a rich and extensive background as an electrician. Starting with an apprenticeship a few years after leaving school, I wisely followed my father's advice to pursue a stable and rewarding career. I recognized early on that working in shops and similar jobs didn't offer the financial future I desired.

My interest in electrics led me to dedicate many years to this field, gaining valuable hands-on experience and skills. Working for a single employer for over 20 years is a significant achievement, highlighting my commitment, reliability, and expertise in this trade.

My career took an interesting turn when my boss had a new position come available, which led me to a promotion of the position of Contracts Manager. This transition from being an electrician to managing contracts and overseeing the team I once worked alongside was quite a challenge.

The economic recession around 2010 was hard for many industries, including construction and electrical work. Losing my job during such a difficult period was tough, especially after dedicating so many years to my profession.

I then started my own business but being in a competitive field like electrical work, can be challenging. I found navigating the business side, such as marketing and self-promotion was difficult without the right tools or knowledge at the time.

I faced significant challenges in building up my client base and sustaining my own business, so I began subcontracting which was a good way to maintain a steady income, but it did lead to fatigue with the long hours.

My neighbours at the time were all in Education, the mentioned that my skillset would be valuable in schools, especially in a site manager.

When applying for jobs my lack of prior experience in a school setting initially seemed like a barrier but I continued to apply. I was successful in a post after applying for the same job twice. I stayed here for around 18 months before applying for my current position at Hodge Hill.

I am the senior building services manager here. My role has a wide range of responsibilities, from hands-on DIY work and managing cleaners to overseeing health and safety within the school.

I have significant responsibilities, particularly when it comes to ensuring the safety and well-being of the children at the school. Conducting risk assessments, investigating accidents, and maintaining a safe environment are critical tasks.

I do receive notes and invitations from the children. These gestures show how much they appreciate my efforts in the school.

My role in the educational sector has provided me with a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment, especially compared to my previous experiences in the private sector. The respect and support I have received from higher management has helped me a lot.

My future goals are to continue working with senior leadership to provide the safest and best environment for our staff and children to operate in, and to continue facing all the challenges that this entails.
